Moderna and J&J COVID-19 Booster Shots Update

On September 26, Kaiser Permanente informs the public that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends booster doses of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines for certain groups.

Moderna: For people who received two doses of the Moderna vaccine at least six months ago, the committee recommended a booster dose for:

  • People 65 or older
  • People 50 through 64 with certain medical conditions
  • People 18 or older who live in long-term care settings

The committee also said that the following groups may choose to get a booster after considering individual risk in consultation with a medical provider:

  • People 18 to 49 years with certain medical conditions
  • People 18 or older who live or work in high-risk settings

Johnson & Johnson: The committee recommended a booster for all people 18 or older who received the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago.

While we wait for final guidance, the CDC has indicated that it will allow for “mixing and matching” COVID-19 vaccine booster doses. This means people would be able to get a booster shot of the vaccine brand they originally received, or a booster of a different vaccine brand.
